Dear Reader,
We present you the fourth edition of Young ICCA Voices. This edition departs from past editions by shifting focus from regions to a developing area of interest: use of artificial intelligence and technology in international arbitration. We grapple with its efficiencies, limitations and consequences, through interviews with thought leadership in the area, contributions from our readers, and local updates from the YICCA network of representatives.
In this fourth edition of Voices, we present two interviews with practitioners with significant experience in the region:
- We speak with Steve Andersen, Division Vice President of Education Services for the International Centre for Dispute Resolution and the American Arbitration Association, about the ICDR-AAA’s recent AI Lab and associated projects; and,
- We speak with Emily Hay, Managing Counsel, ArbBoutique, and co-chair of the ICC Commission Task Force on Artificial Intelligence in International Dispute Resolution. Emily speaks to us about about use of AI in her every-day practice, the important work being done by the ICC task-force on the subject, and what the future holds for AI and arbitration.
The edition also features three articles concerning AI and technology, including:
- AI, Deepfakes and the right to be heard in international arbitration;
- Arabic-language artificial intelligence; and,
-
The implications of AI on the New York Convention.
We would be remiss not to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of many individuals, including Stanimir Alexandrov (ICCA President), Lise Bosman (Executive Director, ICCA Bureau), Paula Baldini (Deputy Executive Director for Publications, ICCA Bureau), Lucy Burns (ICCA Bureau), and Siri Lundqvist (ICCA Bureau). We are truly grateful to each one of them for their support. We were also lucky to be joined in our interview series by Madina Lokova (Regional Representative, Young ICCA; Senior Associate, Lawrence Law) and Joseph Choe (Regional Representative, Young ICCA; Associate, Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom LLP), and supported in our work by Muskaan Chawla (Arbridge Chambers & Solicitors, New Delhi).
We hope you will find this fourth issue of Young ICCA Voices interesting and informative. We welcome any and all feedback concerning this issue or content for upcoming issues at voices@youngicca.org. We wish you a very pleasant reading!
