Darejan Beridze is Named the 2022-2023 Miami Law-Young ICCA Scholar

We are pleased to announce that Darejan Beridze is the recipient of the 2022 Miami Law-Young ICCA Annual Scholarship. Darejan will receive a full-tuition scholarship to attend the International Arbitration LL.M. Program for the academic year 2022-23.

 

Our latest Young ICCA scholarship winner took some time to complete the Young ICCA Proust Questionnaire - get to know Darejan by reading her answers below.

Age: 31 years

Education: Candidate of White & Case International Arbitration LL.M., University of Miami; Master of Law and Business, Bucerius Law School; Master of International Law, Georgian Institute of Public Affairs; Bachelor of Laws, University of Georgia.

How did you get involved in international arbitration? It was through successful participation in the Willem C. Vis Commercial Arbitration Moot, that I discovered my interest in arbitration. Shortly after that, I got a job offer and started my work on an investment arbitration case. Since then, arbitration became the focus area of my practice.

What is your favourite virtue? Trustworthiness.

What are your favourite qualities in another person? Humbleness, honesty, courage, reliability, fairness, and good sense of humor.

What is your chief characteristic? Trustworthiness and integrity, in other words, living according to a strong moral code, aligned with virtue and values.

What is your main fault? Overthinking.

What is your favourite occupation? I have always wanted to be a lawyer. It gives me a thrilling feeling of being a part of justice being done.

What is your idea of happiness? Doing the job I love, being surrounded with great people, and most importantly, living in a peaceful world.

What is your idea of misery? Loneliness.

If not yourself, who would you be? I never thought to be someone else. I believe that the key strength is to accept yourself as you are and constantly work on self-development. 

Where would you like to live? USA.

Who is your favourite prose author? Friedrich Nietzsche.

Who is your favourite hero/heroine in fiction? Meghan Markle’s signature role of Rachel Zane on “Suits”.

Who is your hero in real life? My parents, who are the greatest role models for me.

What historical person do you most dislike? Any dictator, who committed war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity.

What is your favourite name? Anna (my sister’s name).

What do you hate the most? Dishonesty and narcissism.

What is your natural talent? Resourcefulness and problem-solving abilities.

What is your favourite arbitration-related decision? Abaclat and Others v. Argentine Republic, ICSID Case No. ARB/07/5 (Decision on Jurisdiction and Admissibility, as well as Dissenting Opinion).

Who is your favourite arbitrator? It’s difficult to name only one, due to the number of brilliant professionals, including Jan Paulsson, Albert Jan van den Berg, Gabrielle Kaufmann-Kohler, Stefan Kröll.

Who is your mentor? My mentors are my professors, former colleagues, and friends.
