Miami Law-Young ICCA Scholarship Winner Announced

We are pleased to announce the winner of the 2019 Miami Law-Young ICCA scholarship, Edgar Andres Bustamante Sierra. Edgar will attend the International Arbitration LL.M. Program at the University of Miami School of Law for the academic year 2019-2020.

If you had to give an acceptance speech for this scholarship, what would your first line be? I am truly honored to receive this award, but the reward is still far, and it involves even more sacrifice and time.

What is your favourite virtue? Perseverance.

What are your favourite qualities in another person? Sincerity and humility.

What is your chief characteristic? Courageousness.

What is your main fault? Sometimes I feel the need to be the smartest person in the room.

What is your favourite occupation? Legal Advisor for International Law matters.

What is your idea of happiness? Happiness is not something you can earn or obtain, that would be a utopian view of a world inherently filled with events out of our control. However, happiness for me is the realization that you have enough inner-strength to accept the shortcomings of life, thus being able to present yourself as the best possible version against them.

What is your idea of misery? Being in a position that you no longer respect or recognize yourself.

If not yourself, who would you be? A defensive back for a big European soccer team.

Where would you like to live? Santa Monica, Panama, Barcelona, Miami or a Caribbean place.

Who is your favourite prose author? Oscar Wilde.

Who is your favourite hero/heroine in fiction? Special Agent Dale Cooper from the tv series “Twin Peaks”.

Who is your hero in real life? My grandfather (also Cristiano Ronaldo).

What historical person do you most dislike? Hugo Chavez.

What is your favourite name? Mariona or Elena.

What do you hate the most? Tyranny.

What is your natural talent? I have a great ear for music.

What is your favourite arbitration-related decision? Murphy Exploration vs Ecuador (ICSID).

Who is your favourite arbitrator? Patricia Saiz, a great professor from ESADE now appointed member of the International Court of Arbitration.

Who is your mentor? Leonardo Stagg, my first boss and one of the few Ecuadorians appointed as FIFA Members.

What is your motto? I persevere when I’m frustrated.
