We will soon launch elections to replace current co-chair Maria Athanasiou, whose term ends in January 2023. To that effect, we are now accepting expressions of interest from potential co-chair candidates until Sunday 22 January 2023.
Young ICCA Co-chairs are elected in a unique two-stage process which ensures a balance of merit-based succession, geographic and institutional diversity and democratic legitimacy. Gender diversity is maintained by the election mechanism which requires that each leaving female co-chair be substituted by a male co-chair and vice-versa. Therefore, only male candidates will be considered for this election just as only female candidates were considered to replace former co-chair Matthew Morantz.

As a Young ICCA Co-chair, you will have the platform to make a significant difference and to help support young arbitration practitioners and students in their aspirations for a career in international arbitration. As part of advancing Young ICCA’s mission, you will work and connect with like-minded young arbitration practitioners and also collaborate and interact with leading international arbitration practitioners.
Young ICCA Co-chairs direct and manage all activities of Young ICCA. They are the public-facing representatives of and speak on behalf of Young ICCA, an organization with some 10,000 members. Young ICCA Co-chairs sit on the Young ICCA Committee, together with the ICCA President, Executive Director and several ICCA Governing Board Members. The Co-chairs generally work very closely with the ICCA Bureau, and assist on a variety of projects and tasks, including, for example, sitting on ICCA’s Judiciary Committee.
As a Young ICCA Co-chair, you will manage the main four pillars of Young ICCA – Events, Scholarships, Mentoring and the Blog – and be part of improving access to scholarships, skills training workshops, publishing opportunities and encouraging and supporting mentorship for young arbitration practitioners, no matter which corner of the world they may be located. For these reasons, being a Young ICCA Co-chair also involves a huge commitment of time, resources and energy but it is unequivocally, a rewarding experience.

Two-stage election process
Stage 1: During the first stage, the current leadership of Young ICCA and ICCA will select two candidates from among the potential candidates who have submitted an expression of interest. The selection criteria include the candidates’ previous involvement in Young ICCA or similar organizations, their demonstrable appreciation of the organization’s aim to open the doors of international arbitration, their capacity to dedicate the time and resources necessary to fulfil the day-to-day demands of the position, as well as considerations of geographic and institutional diversity.
Stage 2: During the second stage, Young ICCA Members will be invited to vote for their preferred candidate via email. The elections are scheduled for February 2023 and will require each candidate to present their personal profile by filling in Young ICCA's version of a “Proust questionnaire” which will be circulated electronically to Young ICCA members for their consideration (and entertainment!). The election results will be announced in February 2023.
Expressions of interest: Expressions of interest from potential candidates should be submitted by email with the subject line “Young ICCA Co-Chair Candidature” to the current Co-chairs at cochairs@youngicca.org. Please include a current CV and a short letter of motivation not exceeding 500 words addressing the selection criteria outlined above.
Please note: Expressions of interest received after Sunday 22 January 2023 will not be considered. The decision of the co-chairs as to the selection of the candidates to proceed to the election phase is final.
