Miami Law - Young ICCA Scholarship Recipient Announced

We are pleased to announce that Ana Eugenia Guillén Arguedas is the recipient of the Miami Law – Young ICCA Scholarship for the academic year 2026-2027. Ana will be awarded a full tuition fee scholarship to attend the International Arbitration LL.M. Program at the University of Miami School of Law.

How did you get involved in international arbitration?
I began my career in dispute resolution as a paralegal. Early on, I worked on several matters involving the recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards, which sparked my interest in international arbitration. Through those experiences, I became fascinated by the international dimension of commercial disputes, particularly the interaction between different legal systems and the role of arbitration in resolving cross-border conflicts.

 

What is your favourite virtue? Integrity.

 

What are your favourite qualities in another person? Intellectual curiosity, kindness, and reliability.

 

What is your chief characteristic? Perseverance.

 

What is your main fault? Being overly self-demanding.

 

What is your favourite occupation? Helping parties resolve complex disputes through advocacy, strategy, and dialogue.

 

What is your idea of happiness? Living a meaningful life surrounded by family and friends, traveling around the world, continuously learning, and contributing to the development of international arbitration.

 

What is your idea of misery? Living without purpose or the freedom to pursue one's aspirations.

 

If not yourself, who would you be? Someone dedicated to making the world a more peaceful and just place.

 

Where would you like to live? I enjoy living in Costa Rica while maintaining a strong international outlook.

 

Who is your favourite prose author? Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Benedetti.

 

Who is your favourite hero/heroine in fiction? The Powerpuff Girls. 

 

Who is your hero in real life? My parents, for their resilience, wisdom, and unwavering support.

 

What historical person do you most dislike? Any leader who uses power to oppress others and undermine human dignity.

 

What is your favourite name? I do not have a particular favorite.

 

What do you hate the most? Injustice and dishonesty.

 

What is your natural talent? Finding practical solutions to complex problems.

 

What is your favourite arbitration-related decision? The BG Group plc v. Republic of Argentina, for its analysis of the relationship between arbitral tribunals and national courts in international arbitration.

 

Who is your favourite arbitrator? Gabrielle Kaufmann-Kohler.

 

Who is your mentor? All my professors, colleagues, and practitioners who have guided and inspired my professional development throughout my career in dispute resolution.
